Tonight as part of our discussion of the Afterlife, Angels, Demons, All Saints and All Souls, we’ll be building a simple Dia De Los Muertos altar. The tradition comes from Latin America, when the beginning of November is marked by remembering loved ones. If you are able to do so, please bring a photo, a favorite candy, or a stuffed animal, anything that reminds you of someone you loved who has died. You can also bring sugar skulls and fun Dia De Los Muertos decorations if you have them.

Tuesday October 6: Representative Joe Adams
On Tuesday October 6 our presenter will be Rep. Joe Adams, Missouri State House representative for the 86th District. Joe Adams also served a long tenure as Mayor of University City. Joe will talk with us about “Faith and Civic Engagement.” He’ll talk about how his faith causes him to work for justice in our community, and help us think through ways we might engage issues in our society.

Barbi is the Director of Feeding Ministries at Trinity Episcopal Church in the Central West End. She will be talking about the importance of welcoming people as we combat issues of hunger in our community, and will talk with us about strategies for engaging poverty.

Stephen Hale is the brewmaster at the Schlafly Tap Room. He is the creative force behind many craft beers and collaborations with brewers around the world.. Stephen is a longtime member of Christ Church Cathedral. He will talk about how he draws connections between his work and his faith.

June 2: Faith and Pride with The Rev. Mike Angell
The Rev. Mike Angell is the rector of The Episcopal Church of the Holy Communion in University City. He and his husband Ellis Anderson recently had their civil marriage blessed as part of the Sunday morning service at Christ Church Cathedral. June marks LGBT Pride month across the United States. Mike will lead a discussion about the intersections of faith and Pride, how the LGBT community’s growing visible presence is re-shaping our interpretation of tradition, scripture, and even the practice of faith.

May 5: Green Faith with Pamela Dolan
The Rev. Pamela Dolan will be our speaker on May 5. Pamela is the rector of Good Shepherd Episcopal church in Town and Country, and a regular contributor to the St. Louis Post Dispatch. Her church started an urban farm garden last year. Pamela will lead a discussion on “Green Faith,” the intersections of ecology, theology, and gardening.
From Pamela’s latest article in the Post Dispatch:
Last spring my parish started a garden. We called it a community garden, because we really want community members involved, but in fact it’s more like what some are now referring to as food pantry or food bank gardens. We grow vegetables in order to give them away to programs that feed the hungry. It’s a simple model, and can be practiced by churches (or mosques or synagogues or meeting houses) in urban and suburban settings, not just by those congregations with acres of tillable land to spare.
