August 1: “Get the to a nunnery?” The Benedict Option with Dr. Alden Bass

alden-with-chickenOn August 1, our topic is: ”Get thee to a nunnery?” Should we all make the Benedict Option?

In recent months a national spotlight has been turned on the book “The Benedict Option.” Is monasticism the faithful response to a troubled world? Our speaker this month is Alden Bass, professor of theology at SLU and a founding member of the “Lotus House” a “new monastic” community in North St. Louis.

June 6: “Faith and Pride” with The Rev. Mike Angell

mikeprideJune marks LGBT Pride month across the United States. The Rev. Mike Angell, rector of Holy Communion, will lead us in a discussion about the intersections of Faith and Pride, how the LGBT community’s growing visible presence is re-shaping our interpretation of tradition, scripture, and even the practice of faith. This year we’ll take a look at how the inclusive faith community can push back against anti-LGBT pressure from churches in the public sphere

May 2: “Science and Faith”

BibleScienceGiven the national attention following the #ScienceMarch focused on questions science, policy, and faith, we decided this month to convene a conversation about science and faith. Our discussion will be led by Barry A. Hong, Ph.D.  Vice Chairman and Professor of Psychiatry at Washington University School of Medicine, Chief Psychologist at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and an ordained Lutheran minister.  Barry is an internationally recognized authority on the psychosocial aspects of organ donation and transplantation, as well as trauma and its psychological management.

How should we make policies? What are the boundaries of the two disciplines? Should science inform our faith? Should faith inform science? Come and discuss with us.

Resources from “Prayer and the Presidency”

Thanks to all who joined us Tuesday. Mike mentioned a couple of resources, and we’re publishing them here.

The Rev. Dr. Luis Leon, rector of St. John’s Church, Lafayette Square preached a sermon the Sunday after the inauguration. In the sermon he talks about the need of the parish to ask questions about their participation in future inaugurations. This link will take you to their iTunes page. Click the sermon “Children of One God.”

This is Bishop Marianne Edgar Budde’s statement about the Prayer Service at the Washington National Cathedral.

February 7 : “Prayer and the Presidency” with The Rev. Mike Angell

The Rev. Mike Angell will take a turn as presenter this coming month at Theology on Tap. Before moving to St. Louis, Mike served as Assistant Rector at St. John’s Church, Lafayette Square, often called the “Church of the Presidents.” Every president since Madison has worshiped at St. John’s, including the new president on the morning of the inauguration. Mike will talk about his experience there, and we will discuss questions about the relationship of church to state in this new era.

October 9 (Special Date): Justice Across Borders followed by a Debate Watch party

Join us at a special date, and a different location, this October. Noah Bullock, Executive Director of Cristosal will be with us. Cristosal is a fast-growing Anglican Human Rights and Social Justice organizing group based in El Salvador. On the national holiday weekend named for Christopher Columbus, Holy Communion is exploring a relationship with El Salvador. Columbus day has come into controversy in recent years. We thought there was no better time to look at issues of justice that continue to connect North America and Central America.

After Noah’s presentation, stick around for a debate watch party. We’ll watch the candidates for president as the speak from Washington University on the big screens.
