Be part of the Conversation for Theology on Tap Interfaith Conversation with the Rev. Dr. Ben Sanders

One of the things we miss most about Theology on Tap in person is the back and forth discussion. In the pandemic online world, we can still hear from speakers, but it has been hard to create room for discussion. We want to invite you to recreate that space with us.

For the discussion, we want to ask two things of you:

FIRST: ASK QUESTIONS LIVE.

Use the comments on Youtube or Facebook to share your thoughts and ask a question. We know, we know, midwesterners hate drawing attention to themselves, but we have designed this format specifically so we can hear from you. Please think of a question beforehand, ask during the presentation. What have you always wanted to ask a Jewish leader?

SECOND: BUILD A TABLE DISCUSSION

Consider creating your own “table” to talk with friends after the presentation. You could use ZoomGoogle Meet, Facebook Rooms, or your own favorite video chat. Invite a group of friends to watch with you (live, or later on), and sign in to talk.

Here are the discussion questions. Who do you want to talk with?

  1. Where do you locate yourself within your religious tradition? How does the discussion about the “Black Church” cross-denominationally intersect with your sense of place in your religious tradition? Do you have affiliations bigger than your denomination?
  2. Dr. Sanders talked about the questions faced by the Black Church in the St. Louis region. What questions does your particular tradition face in this area?
  3. To what degree has your faith driven you into action “into the streets?” To what degree does your faith take care of your inner life? Is there a tension between the two?

Feb 24 “The Black Church” with the Rev. Dr. Ben Sanders

On February 24 at 5:30pm, we continue a new set of conversations with interfaith leaders. Dr. Ben Sanders and the Rev. Mike Angell will dialogue together about what it means to be a person of faith in today’s America. This dialogue will intentionally engage around The Episcopal Church and the Black Church tradition. Get a “Table Group” together to discuss after the live conversation!

We will stream the conversation live on theTheology on Tap Facebook Page, the Holy Communion Facebook Page, and the Holy Communion Youtube Channel. We would love for you to ask questions and share comments in any of the channels.

December 2: “The church has changed. The church is changing” with Bishop Deon K Johnson

On December 2, the Bishop joins us.

This month we gather online with Bishop Deon for virtual Theology on Tap. Following our first ever live-streamed convention, the Bishop will join us to talk about the ways the church has already changed.

He’ll also talk about the way it is changing for the future. We are kicking off a Diocesan-wide visioning process. We’ll learn more about the direction we are heading together.

Questions for June 3 : “Bi-furious Pride” with Elle Dowd

These questions will guide our small group discussion.

  1. In your upbringing, were faith and your body connected or disconnected? How so? Are there particular stories you can tell or messages you received around the body or sexuality that you embrace or want to distance from?

2. Where have you found “counter-narratives” about sexuality, the body, and spirituality? Is Pride one of those for you? Have you ever thought of Pride through the lens of spirituality?

3. Has there ever been a time that you felt alienated from your body? What contributed to this alienation? What was that like? What places, experiences, or things help you feel most connected to your body? What parts of your body feel particularly holy, divine, or spiritual today?

June 3: “Bi-Furious Pride” with Elle Dowd

On June 3, for Pride Month, we will be joined by Elle Dowd.

Once the Youth Missioner for the Episcopal Diocese of Missouri, through her activism in Ferguson and her social media presence, Elle has become an important voice at the intersections of theology, body positivity, sex, and queer biblical interpretation. Elle calls herself “bi-furious,” and we’ll explore what that means as she pursues ordination in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, and in her current ministry.

This month, we’re taking Theology on Tap online. Until we feel reasonably sure that gathering in person will be safe, even for vulnerable participants, our events will continue to happen online. So you’re invited to Bring Your Own Beverages, Food, and importantly Friends! Let’s gather and talk!

We will be sending the Zoom link out using our email list. Sign up to get the email.

Questions for May 6: “American Prophets” w/journalist Jack Jenkins

These questions will guide our small group discussion for May 6’s Theology on Tap.

  1. Name a “cause” or “issue” that is particularly close to you. How does it intersect with your faith? Could you work on that cause with your faith community?

2. Have you ever been inspired in worship, or at a protest? In song? Hearing a speaker/preacher? Where was that, tell the story? What are the resonances between worship and protest?

3. What are the avenues for working on justice, with or without your faith community, in the midst of a pandemic?

May 6: “American Prophets” w/journalist Jack Jenkins

On May 6, we will be joined by AP and Religion News Service journalist Jack Jenkins. The topic will be “American Prophets.”

Jack is also the author of the just released book American Prophets: The Religious Roots of Progressive Politics and the Ongoing Fight for the Soul of the Country, (and you can order it here!)

Wednesday March 4: “Faith in the Primary?” with The Rev. Mike Angell

Theology on Tap this month will take a theological look at the race for president in 2020. While not endorsing any one candidate or policy position, we will look at clips and quotes, places where faith has played a role in the race thus far. We will ask the age old question: what role should religion play in politics?
The Rev. Mike Angell came to St. Louis from Washington, DC. He has been active on both the local and national stage in questions about faith and our political life. He is the author of the forthcoming: “How can I live Peacefully with Justice?” from Church publishing. He is the regular organizer of Theology on Tap.
Theology on tap meets the first Wednesday of most months at Schlafly Bottleworks.

Wednesday Feb 5: “Reclaiming Dr. King” with The Rev. Dr. Ben Sanders

Join us for a conversation with The Rev. Dr. Ben Sanders III of Eden Seminary as he leads us in an exploration of Dr. King’s legacy. In 1967, Dr. King stated that his “dream had turned into a nightmare.” On the heels of this year’s celebration, how would King evaluate the state of our union?

Professor Sanders’ PhD thesis seeks to “reestablish black theology as a resource for contemporary churches in need of a robust theological approach to race and racism.”

Location Change: Theology on Tap will meet for the first time at the Schlafly Bottleworks.
